Amber is not technically a mineral - it is a fossil.

Amber is fossilized tree resin. Copal is geologically younger than Baltic Amber. Copal is known for containing excellent insect specimens.
Baltic Amber is the oldest and considered the finest in the world, and comes from the Baltic region. It is the type of amber typically set into jewelry.

Metaphysical Properties: Amber helps remove energy blockages, strengthens physical body. Amber is excellent for enhancing altered states of consciousness.

*Update as of Novermber, 2010: some Colombian copal/amber can be dated to be approximately 20 million years of age and can be termed to be true fosillized "Colombian Amber", according to a published study by Terrance M Allen. Link here to read.
