METEORITES

IRON-NICKEL BASED METEORITES

SIKHOTE-ALIN METEORITES FROM RUSSIA
Location: Sikhote-Alin, Maritime Territory, former USSR
Nickel-Iron Meteorite, Coarsest Octahedrite
These meteorites are from a rare actual witnessed fall. On February 12, 1947 people in eastern Siberia witnessed the largest single meteorite fall. Over 23 tons of material showered the area. This meteorite displays regmaglypts, thumbprint-like depressions, and has ragged, twisted and distorted surfaces. This occurred because the meteorite broke up at a rather low altitude and was not subjected to the intense ablation that would have smoothed its surface.

CANYON DIABLO METEORITES FROM ARIZONA USA
Meteor Crater, Arizona, USA
Nickel-Iron Meteorite, Coarse Octahedrite
Canyon Diablo Meteorites are some of the most famous meteorites of all. It fell in Canyou Diablo Arizona about 30,000 years ago leaving a crater 4000 feet across and 600 feet deep. Upon impact, the meteorite is believed to have vaporized and fragments were thrust as far away as 11 miles. Although the composition is 90% iron and 10% nickel, traces of platinum and black diamonds have been found in these specimens.

NANTAN METEORITES FROM CHINA
Iron Meteorite
(92.35% Iron, 6.96% Nickel)
These meteorites are from a rare witnessed fall event. This meteorite impact ocurred in May of 1516, in Nantan, China. Then in 1958 local farmers collected them when China was in need of steel to push the country "Great Leap Forward" advocated by Mao Zetung. They have a coarse octahedral structure.

On average the composition is 92.35% Iron, 6.96% Nickel with minor amounts of Carbon, Copper, Cobalt, Sulphur, Phosphorus, Cromium, Gallenium, Germanium, and many different trace elements. The are a number of scarce minerals found in it, including kamacite, taenite, plessite, scheribersite, triolite, graphite, spherlite, sideroferrite, dyslytite, cliftonite and lawrencite.

GIBEON METEORITES FROM AFRICA
Great Nama Land, Namibia, Africa
Nickel-Iron Meteorite, Fine Octahedrite
This meteorite was first discovered in 1836, although it was known to the local inhabitants prior to that date. Most specimens show flight markings and evidence of a violent break up. High nickel content.
Although the date of the impact is not known, the age of crystallization of the iron-nickel metal in the Gibeon has been dated at 4 billion years.

TEKTITES
SILICA-BASED METEORITES

Tektite is a type of natural glass, chemically and structurally unique, of meteoric origin.  These Tektites are known as Indochinites, and are found on earth within a narrow equatorial belt 80 degrees wide.  They have been found in Thailand, Australia, Viet Nam and the Phillipines.  Tektites usually have a heavily pitted surface.  Many have the appearance of being stretched while in a molten state. They appear black, but when smaller, thinner ones are held up to the light, you can sometimes see a golden tint in translucent areas around the edges.  Estimated date of fall 750,000 years ago. The exact origin of Tektites is still debated today.  Two basic theories are:
1.) It is meteoric glass from deep space.
2.) It is a type of impactite produced by crater forming meteorites on the surface of the moon or earth.

FULGURITES
LIGHTNING STRIKES!
(Fulgurites are not meteorites - they are the result of lightning striking the surface of the earth.)

Fulgurites (from the Latin Fulgur, lightning) are produced by lightning striking exposed surfaces. These Fulgurites have been found at the feet of sand dunes of the Great Sand Sea, in the southwest of Egypt. Their tubular shapes are typical of lightning striking sands. On rocks, they may have different shapes. It has been estimated that each flash of lightning releases an average energy of 1 billion Joules. Air temperatures may reach momentarily 10,000 degrees K, even sometimes 30,000 degrees K. The peak currents measured range from 10 kA to 100 kA but they last only a few microseconds. This high energy will melt or vaporize the sands or rocks with formation of amorphous glass, named by A. Lacroix who studied this phenomenon since 1915: Lechatelierite (after the French mining engineer, Le Chatelier.) Tubular Fulgurites are known that exceed 8 meters but their recovery as a whole is impossible; they are very fragile and are usually found in pieces of 10 to 15 cm, with diameters ranging from 5 to 20 mm. For larger specimens, link here.
